A pulley is a wheel which consists of a groved section to allow a rope or chain to be fed through. A pulley allows for heavy objects to be lifted or pulled along requiring less force.

Giraffe Feeder
1. Students are the Zookeepers of the Melbourne Zoo. Their job is to take care of Henry the Giraffe who had an accident and broke his neck. His neck is now in plaster and he is unable to bend down and pick up the food to feed himself.
2. Students are to work in groups of about four, to develop a pulley system that will be able to raise the giraffe’s food to his mouth and then return to the ground again to reload with fresh food.
3. Students will use materials like: masking/sticky tape, yoghurt containers, cotton spools, polystyrene trays, bottle tops, straws, boxes, cups, rulers, elastic bands and string etc.
